If you put one hand in a bucket of ice water, and the other in a bucket of water as hot as you can stand, then plunge them both into a bucket full of lukewarm water, something strange happens.

The hand that was in the cold water suddenly feels like it’s being burned, and the other hand feels like it’s about to freeze off. You feel this simultaneously. The body struggles to make sense of what’s going on.

This is an example of an incredibly important phenomenon: how we feel now depends on where we were, and what we were doing before. And sometimes it’s not clear cut.

Remember that next time you’re feeling stressed, or emotional, or angry about something. You don’t exist in a vacuum.
